Chicago Bears Guard/Center Matt Slauson was honored after being awarded the Ed Block Courage award, an honor that the players vote on. They are asked to recognize a peer who exhibits professionalism and dedication while being a positive role model in the community.
The Bears have a lot of decisions to make concerning the upcoming draft. After the hiring of John Fox as the new Head Coach of the team, it was clear that going into the season with Jay Cutler leading the team is not a viable option, so the possibility of drafting University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is becoming more and more fathomable.
Newly signed Defensive End Jared Allen has to his new team as well as his former team, the Minnesota Vikings. Allen inked a 4-year $32 Million contract with the Bears last week and showed the confidence that he has always shown.
“My play speaks for itself,” Allen said. “The way I finished the year I think spoke loud and clear.”
Allen, who is now a full year removed from shoulder surgery, says he is in top shape and had a self confessed “glitch” in his technique towards the end of the 2013 season. Still he finished with 52 tackles and 11 sacks and while he could have signed with any number of teams, he went to work trying to figure out the best fit for his game.
“I wanted to make sure that A, they had a quarterback, because if you have a quarterback, you have a chance. B, it had to be scheme or system that I fit into, and C, I wanted to be … believing in the system and believing in the staff that I’m playing for, and really being on the same page philosophically about what they’re trying to accomplish.”
The Bears continue to prepare for the 2014 preseason.
The Chicago Bears offensive line has pretty much been sorted out in this early part of the off season. With the signing of veteran Jermon Bushrod to take over the LT position, the Bears have 35 million reasons to believe he is the answer.
Starting at LG position is Matt Slauson who started 48 of 51 games with the New York Jets. Roberto Garza returns as the starting center while Rookie RG Kyle Long is slotted to begin the season with the first team. J;Marcus Webb, who lost his starting LT position to Bushrod will take over the RT position.
